Can salsa dancing help ease depression in young adults?
Eight weeks of salsa classes eased depression symptoms more than waiting in a study of 121 young adults.
Cambridge University researchers studied people ages 18–24 with mild to moderately severe symptoms. One group took salsa classes, while another waited. For our Dance Fitness community, this offers a useful look at benefits beyond the workout itself.
The dancers showed a greater drop in symptoms of Depression / Low Mood. Both groups improved in some areas, including loneliness and Anxiety, both general and in social settings. But the dancers pulled clearly ahead on feeling less anxious around others and daily happiness. That matters: some improvement happened without classes, yet the dance group still did better.
The report does not give the size of those changes. It provides no symptom scores or percentage drop to compare against your own numbers. It also does not tell us whether the benefits lasted beyond eight weeks. These results describe young adults taking salsa classes, not every age or dance style.
For members tracking their routine, mood belongs in the picture too. A simple record could pair class attendance with daily happiness ratings. Using the same scale each time could make changes easier to notice. Notes about comfort around others could add context that a number misses.
Comparing those records with community peers could highlight shared experiences and differences. The goal is to notice patterns, not to expect everyone’s eight weeks to look alike.
What changes in your mood or comfort around others have you noticed since starting dance classes?
