Can adding Pilates help you run a faster 5K?
Pilates may help: runners in a small study ran a faster 5K after 12 weeks than those who did not do Pilates.
Runner’s World highlights this finding in its look at Cross Training for runners. The article cites a small 2018 study published in PLOS One. It compared runners who followed a Pilates program with those who did not. The excerpt does not give the number of people studied or their exact race times.
That leaves an important gap: we know which group finished faster, but not by how much. We also cannot tell from this excerpt how often they practiced. The result is promising, not a promise of faster times. It does not establish whether Pilates beats Yoga, despite the article’s broader comparison.
The article also shares runner Rowbury’s experience. She started Pilates after giving birth in 2018. After about a year, she says her 200-meter runs were faster at age 34 than ever before. She credits better use of her deep core muscles and better whole-body connection. That is one runner’s experience, separate from the study’s findings.
For BioSocial members, the useful angle is tracking both habits and results. A training log could pair weekly Pilates sessions with 5K times. Notes about total running distance and other workout changes would add context. Comparing similar routes and efforts could make those notes more useful. Community comparisons can reveal different experiences without assuming one habit explains every change.
What changes, if any, have you noticed in your running times or how running feels since adding Pilates?
