Can salsa dance classes help when you're feeling down?
Salsa classes reduced symptoms more than waiting for improvement in young adults studied at Cambridge.
Scripps News describes a Cambridge University study published in summer 2025. It focused on young adults with mild to moderately severe symptoms. For our Depression / Low Mood community, the key point is the comparison. People taking salsa classes improved more than those waiting without the classes.
The study also tracked daily happiness. People in the salsa group reported larger gains on that measure, too. That means the reported benefits included both fewer symptoms and more daily happiness. But the source excerpt gives no group sizes, class schedule, or score changes. We know the direction of the results, not how large they were.
The comparison also leaves an important question open. It does not show whether salsa works better than another group activity. Nor does this summary separate dancing from music, routine, or Social Connection. Those limits matter when comparing this finding with our own experiences.
For members already exploring Dance Fitness, this offers a useful tracking idea. A simple daily mood rating could sit beside class attendance notes. Using the same rating scale each day makes those notes easier to compare. Looking across class days and other days may reveal patterns worth sharing. Those patterns would not prove that dancing caused a change.
Community notes can also capture what a number misses: enjoyment, belonging, or difficulty showing up. Both better days and unchanged days belong in that picture.
If you've tried salsa or another dance class, what changed in your mood or daily ratings?
